Calculation method
How the measurement uncertainty budget calculator works
Provide a transparent first-order uncertainty ledger with normalized components and variance contributions rather than adding unlike limits or confusing uncertainty with error.
Normalize each component to standard uncertainty uᵢ, multiply by sensitivity coefficient cᵢ, then u_c = √Σ(cᵢuᵢ)² for independent components. Expanded uncertainty U = k × u_c.
Worked example
Measurement Uncertainty Budget example
Standard 0.12, k=2 expanded 0.20, and rectangular half-width 0.05 normalize to 0.12, 0.10, and about 0.0289; combined standard uncertainty is about 0.15885.
Normalize each component to standard uncertainty uᵢ, multiply by sensitivity coefficient cᵢ, then u_c = √Σ(cᵢuᵢ)² for independent components. Expanded uncertainty U = k × u_c.

Precision and limits
Measurement and calibration boundary
This first-order model assumes the entered components are independent and that their units are compatible after applying sensitivity coefficients. It does not derive components, covariance, effective degrees of freedom, coverage probability, nonlinear propagation, Monte Carlo results, decision rules, or accreditation compliance.
Precision and reporting
Calculations retain working precision and round only for display. Very small and large nonzero values use scientific notation; displayed digits cannot create accuracy, traceability, or observational certainty absent from the entered data.
