Quick guide

How to use this calculator

  1. Choose the real journey or motion relationship first, then enter only the measurements that belong to that mode.
  2. Keep every distance, speed, duration, clock, direction, break, reserve, wind, or current convention explicit; the calculator normalizes compatible units internally.
  3. Use the companion outputs to reconcile the scenario, then retain the stated limits before using an estimate for a real journey.

Calculation method

How the journey progress and eta calculator works

Update a journey estimate from what has actually been completed rather than continuing to rely only on the original plan.

Observed average speed = completed distance ÷ elapsed time. Remaining moving time = remaining distance ÷ observed average speed; ETA adds that time and the entered future-break allowance to the optional current clock.

Worked example

Journey Progress and ETA example

After completing 120 km of a 300 km journey in 1.5 hours, the observed average is 80 km/h and the remaining moving time is 2.25 hours.

Observed average speed = completed distance ÷ elapsed time. Remaining moving time = remaining distance ÷ observed average speed; ETA adds that time and the entered future-break allowance to the optional current clock.

Supported inputs

Precision and limits

Scenario boundary

The projection assumes the observed average remains representative. It does not receive live location, traffic, weather, route, battery, fuel, fatigue, or navigation data and should not be used as a safety-critical ETA.

Precision and time

Calculations retain working precision and round durations to the nearest second and clock outputs to the nearest minute. Entered averages and schedules remain assumptions, not live observations or guarantees.

Category ownership

This calculator handles neutral travel, timing, range, or relative-motion arithmetic. Vehicle operating cost and performance belong in Automotive; competition pacing belongs in Sports; time zones belong in Dates & Times; route geography belongs in Travel & Geography; advanced dynamics belong in Engineering & Science.
