Quick guide
How to use this calculator
- Choose the real journey or motion relationship first, then enter only the measurements that belong to that mode.
- Keep every distance, speed, duration, clock, direction, break, reserve, wind, or current convention explicit; the calculator normalizes compatible units internally.
- Use the companion outputs to reconcile the scenario, then retain the stated limits before using an estimate for a real journey.
Calculation method
How the multi-leg journey calculator works
Model a journey whose segments cannot be represented honestly by one unweighted average of the entered speeds.
Each leg time equals normalized distance ÷ normalized speed. Total moving time is the sum of leg times; elapsed time adds breaks; moving and overall average speeds divide total distance by their respective time bases.
Worked example
Multi-Leg Journey example
A 120 km leg at 80 km/h, a 15-minute break, then 50 mi at 55 mph is reconciled from the two individual durations—not by averaging 80 and 55.
Each leg time equals normalized distance ÷ normalized speed. Total moving time is the sum of leg times; elapsed time adds breaks; moving and overall average speeds divide total distance by their respective time bases.

Precision and limits
Scenario boundary
Leg speeds are entered average scenario speeds. The calculator does not choose a route, infer transfer time, apply traffic or weather, or certify compliance with driving, navigation, or working-time rules.
Precision and time
Calculations retain working precision and round durations to the nearest second and clock outputs to the nearest minute. Entered averages and schedules remain assumptions, not live observations or guarantees.
Category ownership
This calculator handles neutral travel, timing, range, or relative-motion arithmetic. Vehicle operating cost and performance belong in Automotive; competition pacing belongs in Sports; time zones belong in Dates & Times; route geography belongs in Travel & Geography; advanced dynamics belong in Engineering & Science.
