The reasoning behind the result

Elapsed time and effort are not interchangeable

Two people working for two hours represent two elapsed hours and four person-hours. A deployment with four exposure units for twelve hours represents forty-eight unit-hours. The selected mode determines which question the rate answers.

The multiplier does not assert that effort scales detection linearly. Crowding, repeated detections, saturation or changing conditions may make two units different from twice the useful effort of one.

Pool counts over effort

Rpooled = Σnᵢ/ΣEᵢ

A longer session contributes more effort exposure. The pooled rate divides total count by total effort and therefore respects that difference. Averaging session rates equally would treat a short session as equally informative to a long one.

Surveyed sessions with no observations still contribute effort. Omitting them changes the measured rate. A session that never happened should not be entered as a zero-count completed session.

A rate describes the record

Count per unit effort is an observation index under the entered conditions. It does not by itself estimate true abundance, detection probability or a causal effect of sampling intensity.

The ledger keeps the observations and their denominators together, so differences can be checked before interpretation. No biological capture procedure or operational sampling target is selected.

Why unequal sessions need effort weighting

  1. A two-hour session records twelve observations, or six per hour.
  2. A one-hour session records three, or three per hour.
  3. The pooled rate is (12 + 3)/(2 + 1) = 5 per hour, not the unweighted mean of 4.5.

The two-hour session contributes twice as much measured time exposure.
