Quick guide

How to use the long subtraction calculator

  1. Enter the starting value in the minuend field.
  2. Enter the value you want to subtract in the subtrahend field.
  3. Read the exact difference as soon as both entries are valid.
  4. Open the column steps to inspect each borrow, or copy the exact result.

Exact decimal arithmetic

Aligned place values without floating-point rounding

The calculator pads the shorter decimal, aligns place values, and subtracts individual decimal digits. It never converts your inputs to ordinary browser floating-point numbers.

The result preserves the greatest number of decimal places entered. For example, 5.00 − 2.3 is displayed as 2.70.

Worked example

Subtract 178.45 from 503.20

Align the decimal points and work from the hundredths column toward the left. Borrow from the next place whenever the upper digit is too small. The exact difference is 324.75.

503.20 − 178.45 = 324.75

Supported inputs

Precision, negative results, and limits

Whole numbers and decimals

Use digits with one optional decimal point and no grouping separators.

Exact large values

Each value can contain up to 200 digits, including up to 100 decimal places.

Negative differences

If the subtrahend is larger, the calculator subtracts the magnitudes and applies the correct minus sign.

Clear scope

Negative inputs, fractions, scientific notation, units, and currency symbols are not accepted here.
