Calculation method
How the smoking pack-years calculator works
Packs per day = cigarettes per day ÷ cigarettes per pack; pack-years = packs per day × years smoked.
Pack-years summarize average cumulative cigarette exposure. They do not capture all exposure patterns, other tobacco products, second-hand smoke, or an individual's cancer risk.
Worked example
Smoking Pack-Years example
20 cigarettes per day for 15 years with 20 cigarettes per pack equals 15 pack-years.
Packs per day = cigarettes per day ÷ cigarettes per pack; pack-years = packs per day × years smoked.
