Quick guide

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the cash balance at the start of the reporting period. Use a negative value only when the period begins with an overdraft or other negative cash position.
  2. Add all cash actually received during the period, then add all cash actually paid during that same period.
  3. Review net cash flow, the calculated closing cash balance, cash-flow direction, and how fully inflows covered outflows.

Calculation method

From opening cash to closing cash

Net cash flow subtracts cash paid from cash received. A positive result means cash increased during the period; a negative result means cash decreased.

Closing cash adds net cash flow to the opening balance. Inflow coverage divides cash received by cash paid and is undefined when no cash was paid.

All arithmetic uses exact fixed decimals. The tool does not infer currency or reporting period, so every entry must use the same basis.

Worked example

Monthly cash-flow example

Opening cash of 10,000, cash received of 30,000, and cash paid of 24,000 give positive net cash flow of 6,000.00, closing cash of 16,000.00, and inflow coverage of 125%.

Net cash flow = cash received − cash paid. Closing cash = opening cash + net cash flow. Inflow coverage = cash received ÷ cash paid × 100%.

Supported inputs

Precision and limits

Cash basis

Enter cash when it was received or paid. Do not mix invoices, accrued income, unpaid bills, depreciation, or other non-cash accounting entries into these totals.

One consistent period

Opening cash must be the balance immediately before the entered inflows and outflows. Use the same currency and reporting period for every amount.

Interpretation

Positive cash flow does not by itself mean the activity is profitable, and negative cash flow is not automatically harmful. Financing, investment, timing, seasonality, and one-off transactions can explain the movement.

Scope boundary

This calculator summarizes one period. Use Cash Flow Forecast for operating, investing, and financing scenarios, or Operating Cash Flow for an indirect-method reconciliation.

Precision and privacy

Fixed decimals accept up to 30 digits and 12 decimal places, with each input capped at an absolute value of 1e12. Values remain in this browser.
