How the lumen, lux and area calculator works
Complete the pure photometric relationship without pretending that lumens alone determine a real lighting design.
Average illuminance E in lux equals total incident luminous flux Φ in lumens divided by illuminated area A in square metres: E = Φ/A. Reverse modes rearrange that same relationship.
Worked example
Lumen, Lux and Area example
A total incident flux of 2,400 lumens spread uniformly over 8 m² corresponds to an average illuminance of 300 lux.

Light and optics boundary
This is an ideal incident-flux relationship. It does not infer luminaire quantity, utilization factor, maintenance factor, beam overlap, mounting geometry, surface reflectance, daylight, glare, code compliance, or measured uniformity.
Units and precision
Calculations normalize compatible units once, retain working precision, and round only for display. Very small and large nonzero values use scientific notation; displayed precision cannot exceed the entered measurements or source data.
Decision boundary
This calculator does not select a lighting standard, certify compliance, predict perception, or replace calibrated measurement, photometric distribution data, optical design, or safety assessment.
