Calculation method
How the archive split and storage media calculator works
Convert a large dataset into a whole-number handling plan without silently placing payload in capacity reserved for headers, parity, checksums, packaging, or service limits.
Payload capacity per part = maximum part/media capacity − reserved overhead. Part count = ceiling(dataset ÷ payload capacity); final-part payload and total unused payload capacity follow from that whole-number count.
Worked example
Archive Split and Storage Media example
A 125 GB dataset split into 25 GB media with 0.25 GB reserved per medium needs 6 media; the last carries 1.25 GB of payload.
Payload capacity per part = maximum part/media capacity − reserved overhead. Part count = ceiling(dataset ÷ payload capacity); final-part payload and total unused payload capacity follow from that whole-number count.

Precision and limits
Digital-system boundary
The result is a capacity plan, not an archive command. Filesystem limits, multipart syntax, checksums, parity, encryption, compression, provider rounding, optical-media formatting and recoverability are not inferred.
Units and precision
One byte is eight bits. Decimal kB, MB, GB and TB use powers of 1,000; binary KiB, MiB, GiB and TiB use powers of 1,024. Calculations retain working precision and round only for display.
