Use the correct module
The coordinating module includes the planned joint; the manufactured unit is smaller. Calculate whole courses and positions from the module, then resolve closures and cuts at boundaries.
Confirm actual product dimensions and tolerances before setting control elevations.
Draft openings and intersections
Area deduction alone cannot show returns, jambs, sills, lintel bearing, corners, pilasters, control joints, or special bond units. Draw or schedule these zones.
Keep structural and architectural unit types distinct even when their face dimensions match.
Estimate mortar and grout separately
Mortar responds to bed and head joints, face-shell or full bedding, unit geometry, waste, and the selected mix. Grout responds to cell geometry, filled height, reinforcement displacement, lifts, and consolidation.
