How to Calculate Percentages in Real Situations

Identify the three roles

The whole is the reference quantity, the part is the portion being described, and the percentage is their ratio multiplied by 100. Label these roles before entering numbers because ordinary language often places them in different orders.

If 36 is 15% of a total, 36 is the part and the unknown total is the whole. If the question asks what percent 36 is of 240, the same numbers occupy different known roles.

Keep the base visible

A percentage of revenue, cost, population, area, or time can lead to very different interpretations. Two percentages cannot be combined safely when their bases differ.

Weighted aggregation may be needed when groups have different totals; averaging displayed rates directly can misstate the combined result.

Move from arithmetic to use

After calculating, translate the result back into its original unit and decision. A 12% defect rate should also identify the inspected population, period, and whether repeat defects are counted.

For money, distinguish percentage arithmetic from jurisdiction-specific tax, fee, disclosure, or accounting treatment.
