- Use matching biological material for projected area and dry mass in every row.
- Declare whether petioles, rachises and damaged portions are included and keep that convention consistent.
- Inspect individual SLA values and the pooled ratio; do not substitute an unweighted mean of ratios when the desired quantity is total area divided by total mass.
- Interpret the trait only within the actual sampling, environment, developmental stage and drying protocol.

Relate a declared one-sided or projected leaf area to the dry mass of the same material without inventing protocol choices, trait targets or species interpretations.

Worked example
Separate a pooled ratio from a mean of ratios
The pooled SLA follows total matching area divided by total matching dry mass; the individual mean remains a separate descriptive result.

Precision and limits
Matching material required
Area and dry mass must describe the same included leaf material. The calculator cannot detect mismatched samples or inclusion rules.
No drying or area protocol supplied
The tool does not choose rehydration, scanning, petiole/rachis inclusion, oven temperature, drying duration or mass-stability criteria.
No species interpretation
SLA is not converted into growth potential, plant health, shade status, resource strategy or a universal expected range.
Rows are not automatic replicates
Individual leaves nested within one plant or plot are not automatically independent experimental units, and descriptive SD is not an inferential uncertainty interval.
Numerical support
Entered projected areas and matching dry masses support 10⁻¹² through 10¹⁵ in the selected input unit, with 1–30 named records. These computation bounds are not a trait reference range.
