Understand the relationship

The reasoning behind the result

Normalization preserves ratios

wi = Wi/Wref

Dividing every comparable component by the same positive reference preserves pairwise ratios while changing the scale. Maximum normalization makes at least one entered type equal one.

A separate reference may yield every entered relative value below or above one.

Relative fitness is dimensionless but contextual

Units cancel only because numerator and denominator use the same fitness component. Cancelling units does not erase stage, environment or sampling design.

Survival and fecundity values cannot share one normalization merely because both are nonnegative.

Zero is an entered boundary

A zero component produces relative fitness zero. It does not establish permanent absence, sterility or extinction beyond the entered observation interval.

At least one entered or separate reference must be positive so normalization is defined.

No population weighting is implied

The workbench gives each row its own ratio and does not use population frequencies. Mean population fitness requires explicit type frequencies or counts.

Relative values alone do not predict allele-frequency change without an inheritance and selection model.

Normalize three genotype viability components

  1. The entered components are 0.9 for AA, 1.0 for Aa and 0.4 for aa.
  2. Maximum normalization chooses Wref = 1.0.
  3. AA relative fitness is 0.9/1.0 = 0.9.
  4. Aa relative fitness is 1.0 and aa relative fitness is 0.4.
  5. All raw values remain in the ledger beside their ratios.

The ratios describe one declared viability component and do not supply genotype frequencies or a population mean.

Relative components do not by themselves model inheritance, dominance, drift or future frequency.

Numerical support

Use 2–20 rows with components from zero through 10¹² and a positive normalization reference. Positive derived ratios must remain representable; otherwise an explicit range message asks for equivalent rescaling.
