The reasoning behind the result

A population balance accounts for additions and removals

ΔNcomponents = B − D + I − O + A

B and D are recorded births and deaths during an interval. I and O are recorded inflows and outflows for the same population definition and boundary. A is a signed, explicitly entered adjustment such as a known change in classification or coverage.

These quantities have population units. They are not percentages or per-year rates. Births minus deaths is natural change; inflows minus outflows is net migration. Keeping them separate prevents a total change from being mislabelled as a birth rate or migration rate.

A residual exposes an unreconciled difference

R = Nrecorded,end − (Nstart + B − D + I − O + A)

Comparison mode keeps a supplied endpoint alongside the endpoint reconstructed from components. Their difference is the residual. A positive residual means the recorded endpoint is higher than the supplied components explain; a negative one means it is lower.

The arithmetic does not identify the cause. Missing components, measurement differences, timing or inconsistent coverage can all matter. Assigning the residual to migration would require outside evidence. In a sequence, the recorded endpoint becomes the next starting population, preserving the actual record chain.

Relative change needs a stated denominator and duration

Percent change = 100 ΔN/Nstart; arithmetic rate = ΔN/Δt

A two-year interval and a six-month interval cannot be compared by their total changes alone. The calculator divides each change by its supplied duration when reporting a per-time-unit arithmetic rate. Relative component rates additionally divide by the starting population and multiply by 1,000.

These rates do not use person-years at risk, midyear population or a compound-growth convention. They should not be substituted for official birth, death or migration rates that use another denominator. A zero starting population leaves relative change undefined even when the absolute balance is valid.

A sequential ledger is a record reconciliation

Each period begins where the preceding one ends. In reconstruction mode this is the component-derived endpoint; in comparison mode it is the supplied recorded endpoint. Changing the geographic or population definition between rows requires an explicit, justified adjustment or a separate ledger.

The output does not forecast future births, deaths or migration. Fractional inputs can represent entered estimates, but the calculator supplies no uncertainty model or official population estimate. It also cannot determine whether a missing input should be treated as zero.

Follow the numbers

A five-person difference remains unexplained

  1. Start with 1,000 and enter 30 births, 20 deaths, 50 inflows and 40 outflows, with no known adjustment.
  2. Natural change is 30−20=10 and net migration is 50−40=10, giving reconstructed end 1,000+10+10=1,020.
  3. If the recorded endpoint is 1,025, residual=1,025−1,020=5. Recorded net change is 25, or 2.5% of the starting population.

Precision and limits

Consistent coverage is required

All component counts and endpoints must refer to the same population, boundary and interval. The calculator cannot validate census coverage or identify a residual's cause. A component change that cannot be retained to nine significant digits at the starting population's numeric scale is rejected rather than silently discarded.

No official estimate or forecast

Rates use the explicitly stated starting-population denominator. No demographic assumptions, future rates, uncertainty intervals or official estimates are inferred.
